If you’re in Ghana and use MTN, chances are you’ve asked yourself this frustrating question:
“Why does my data finish so fast?”

Well, you’re not alone. And now, MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett has finally addressed the issue publicly—and his answer may surprise you.

“If I Steal Your Data, I Lose My Bonus”

Speaking at MTN House in Accra, Stephen Blewett tackled the long-standing accusation that telcos deliberately steal users’ data. His response?
“We have no reason to want to steal your data… If I steal your data, I can’t declare it, and I don’t get a bonus.”

Blewett emphasized that MTN’s revenue is transparently audited, and manipulating user data would hurt the company and his own performance-based pay.

Here’s the Real Reason Your Data Runs Out

According to the CEO, the faster your internet, the faster your data gets used.
    Here’s why:

Apps like YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok automatically adjust to stream in higher video quality when they detect a stronger network.

Higher resolution = more data consumed.

Better network = faster downloads, auto-updates, and more background data usage.

Blewett compared it to Pac-Man: “A better network just eats your data up—and that’s not us, that’s how the internet works.”

Ghanaians Love Video—And That Affects Data Use

The CEO made a humorous observation:
“In Ghana, people hold their phones vertically and watch lots of videos. There are so many YouTube videos people here watch that I’ve never even heard of.”

In short, our mobile habits in Ghana drive up our own data use.

MTN’s Billing System Is Audited and Transparent

Blewett reassured customers that MTN’s billing system goes through independent audits and internal checks by a Revenue Assurance Department to prevent any errors or unethical practices.

“If there was something wrong, our auditors would never approve our financials.”

So, What Can You Do to Save Your Data?

While MTN isn’t “stealing” data, many users unknowingly burn through their bundles. Here are a few quick tips:

Change video settings on YouTube to 360p or 480p

Disable auto-updates for apps on mobile data

Use data-saving browsers like Opera Mini

Enable Data Saver Mode on your phone

Monitor background apps and data usage in settings

    Final Thoughts

The CEO’s explanation sheds light on a common digital myth. It’s not about telcos being dishonest—it’s about how faster internet leads to faster consumption.

Still skeptical? That’s okay—many users are. But one thing is clear: understanding how your apps and habits use data can help you take back control.

What’s your experience with MTN data usage? Do you believe the CEO? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
