I Tested 3 Free VPNs — Here’s the Fastest (Real Speed Test)
Free VPNs promise privacy, unlimited access, and fast internet speeds.
But here’s the real question most people never test.
When you turn on a free VPN… does it actually work well?
Or does it quietly slow down your internet and ruin your experience?
Many people install a free VPN expecting better security and unrestricted access, only to find that videos buffer, downloads slow down, and online games lag badly.
So instead of guessing, I decided to run a real-world test.
In this experiment, I tested three popular free VPNs to see which one is actually the fastest and most usable for everyday activities like streaming, browsing, video calls, and downloads.
The VPNs tested were:
- TunnelBear Free VPN
- Windscribe Free VPN
- Proton VPN Free
To make the results fair and reliable, I used the same phone, the same network, and the same testing tool for every test.
Let’s walk through the results.
How the Test Was Performed
To make the comparison accurate, I followed a consistent testing method.
First, I measured my internet speed without any VPN connected. This is called the base speed, and it shows how fast the internet is normally.
Then I tested each VPN using:
- The same MTN mobile network
- The fastest server automatically selected by the VPN
- Speedtest by Ookla
- Multiple test runs for accuracy
This allows us to clearly see how much each VPN slows down (or maintains) the internet speed.
Understanding the Speed Test Results
Before looking at the VPN results, it’s important to understand the three main measurements used in internet speed tests.
Download Speed
Download speed measures how fast data travels from the internet to your device.
This affects:
- Streaming videos on YouTube or Netflix
- Loading websites
- Downloading apps and files
My base download speed ranged between 17 Mbps and 23 Mbps.
This speed is actually quite good for a single mobile user.
With speeds in this range you can:
- Stream YouTube in 1080p HD
- Watch Netflix smoothly
- Download apps quickly
- Browse websites without delays
4K streaming typically requires about 25 Mbps, so this connection is very close to that level.
Upload Speed
Upload speed measures how fast data travels from your device to the internet.
This affects:
- Video calls on Zoom or Teams
- Uploading photos and videos
- Online gaming communication
- Sending files
The base upload speed ranged between 12 Mbps and 14 Mbps.
That is excellent for a 4G mobile connection.
With this speed you can easily:
- Participate in high-quality video meetings
- Upload content to social media
- Send large files quickly
Ping (Latency)
Ping measures the delay between your device and the server.
In simple terms, it shows how quickly the internet responds to your actions.
Lower ping is extremely important for:
- Online gaming
- Live video calls
- Real-time communication
My base ping was about 40 milliseconds.
That is considered very good for mobile internet.
Anything above 100 milliseconds starts to feel slow in games and live conversations.
Base Internet Performance (No VPN)
Without any VPN connected, the results were:
Download speed: 17–23 Mbps
Upload speed: 12–14 Mbps
Ping: around 40 ms
In real-life usage this means:
- 1080p YouTube videos play smoothly
- Netflix streams without buffering
- Video calls remain stable
- Downloads are reasonably fast
- Online gaming works with minimal delay
This gives us a solid baseline to compare the VPN performance.
VPN Speed Test Results
Now let’s see what happened when each VPN was turned on.
TunnelBear Free VPN Speed Test
TunnelBear was the first VPN tested.
The VPN automatically selected the fastest available server, and two speed tests were performed.
Results
Download speed: around 11 Mbps
Upload speed: 12–13 Mbps
Ping: 255–260 ms
What This Means
Compared to the base speed, TunnelBear caused a noticeable drop in download speed and a large increase in ping.
In real use:
- Streaming works, but mostly at 720p comfortably
- Large downloads take longer
- Upload performance remains decent
- Gaming becomes difficult due to the high ping
- Video calls may experience slight delay
TunnelBear is usable for light browsing and casual streaming, but it is clearly slower than the original connection.
Windscribe Free VPN Speed Test
Next, I tested Windscribe VPN using the same conditions.
Results
Download speed: 15–20 Mbps
Upload speed: 10–14 Mbps
Ping: 148–178 ms
What This Means
Windscribe performed much closer to the original internet speed.
In real use:
- 1080p streaming works smoothly
- Downloads remain fairly fast
- Uploading files is still comfortable
- Video calls are mostly stable
- Gaming may still suffer due to higher ping
Compared to TunnelBear, Windscribe was clearly faster and more stable.
Proton VPN Free Speed Test
Finally, I tested Proton VPN Free.
Results
Download speed: 18–20 Mbps
Upload speed: 12–14 Mbps
Ping: 148–158 ms
What This Means
Proton VPN delivered the closest performance to the base internet speed.
In real use:
- 1080p streaming works perfectly
- Downloads remain fast
- Uploading content is smooth
- Video calls work reliably
- Gaming still experiences some delay due to higher ping
Among the three VPNs tested, Proton VPN preserved the most speed.
Final Ranking — Fastest to Slowest
Based on overall speed consistency and real-life usability, the ranking is:
1️⃣ Proton VPN Free
Closest to the base speed with strong download and upload performance.
2️⃣ Windscribe Free VPN
Very good speeds but slightly less consistent than Proton.
3️⃣ TunnelBear Free VPN
Largest drop in download speed and highest ping.
Important Observation About Free VPNs
One important thing became very clear during this test.
All free VPNs increased ping significantly.
This means:
- Competitive online gaming is not ideal
- Real-time applications may experience delay
However, for streaming, browsing, and downloads, some free VPNs still perform quite well.
Which Free VPN Is Best?
From this experiment:
- Best for streaming: Proton VPN
- Best balanced performance: Windscribe
- Best for light browsing: TunnelBear
But internet performance can vary depending on:
- Your location
- Your mobile network
- The VPN server used
